The power of one-to-ones

Let’s take a look at a few reasons why one-to-ones are so powerful:

1.One-to-ones are a chance to go much deeper into the person you’re talking to. At a large networking event, there is never much time to talk, so it is hard to find out a great deal about someone.

2.Another key challenge exists at a networking event compared to a one-to-one meeting: there are other people there! Other attendees means interruptions, both good and bad. That doesn’t happen in a one-to-one.

3.In a one-to-one meeting, you know that you’ve got the undivided attention of your partner for the allotted time of your meeting. At a networking event, whoever you’re talking to will have their own goals and aspirations of what they want to get out of the event, and who they want to talk to.

4.Given that we’re generally networking in the context of developing our business, it stands to reason that a lot of the conversation will be business-based. However, in a one-to-one, you have the extra time to find out about the person behind the business. As we’ve just seen in my story about Steve, it is often the ‘stuff’ about them that makes it possible to build a rapport strong enough to pass them really good referrals.

5.One-to-one meetings can be held anywhere; a typical venue would be the local coffee shop, as it is on ‘neutral’ ground and will likely be convenient for both parties. However, there is another option. Why not try holding the meeting at one of the respective partners’ place of business?

There is a significant benefit to doing this, particularly for the partner that is on ‘away’ ground. When you visit someone’s place of business, you get to learn so much about their business. What is their team like? What’s up on the walls? Even if you know the person well, you’ll learn entirely new things about their business.

6.To finish, one for us Unnatural Networkers. When we discussed exiting a comfortable conversation in Chapter 6, it was like we were forcing ourselves back into the abyss. In a one-to-one meeting, that feeling doesn’t exist! You’re only ever going to be talking to one person, and the introvert in you will be excellent at finding out the interesting connections between the two of you.
